Where are fire curtains used?
Since fire and smoke curtains have small, light headboxes, they can be installed “hidden” above the ceiling and offer more architectural freedom than traditional solutions, like doors or walls.
Fire curtains are often used in open-plan situations where the building’s aesthetics matter the most, like atria, stairwells, and lobbies of all types of buildings, from residential to retail to industrial.
But first, what is a fire curtain?
A Fire curtain is a deployable fire-rated textile that descends from the ceiling to block an opening and stop fire and smoke from spreading. It comprises a housing (headbox), lateral guides, and closing strip (bottom bar).
The fire curtain will deploy to seal off an opening via gravity in response to either a power interruption or a signal from the fire alarm control panel. Once the curtain is uncoiled, it will maintain the integrity of a fire barrier. Fire curtains can be used to replace a non-load-bearing wall.
How does a fire curtain work?
The Fire Curtain FA is an automatic, gravity fail-safe barrier with integrated seals. The Fire Protective Curtain FA is UL 10D listed and approved for fire protection. This opening protective curtain complies with NFPA 80 requirements and is available with 1-hour and 3-hour fire ratings and UL listed low-voltage 48VDC motor.
The Fire Curtain FA is low profile, lightweight, and can be installed almost invisible above the ceiling and remains hidden until it’s needed. The FA curtain comes in different sizes and is used in multiple applications, from openings in firewalls to multi-story atriums.

Meet the Fire Protective Curtain FA from Fire Curtain Technologies
The curtain will remain inside the headbox until triggered by a local detector or fire alarm control panel. In the event of a fire, the fire curtain will descend, sealing off an opening. Fire curtains also feature a fail-safe gravity technology; this will allow the curtain to deploy under gravity at a steady speed even if there’s no power in the building.
Our Product
The purpose of a fire curtain is to seal off an area to contain a fire and to prevent it from spreading. It operates automatically when interfaced with the building fire alarm system.
Comprised of a flexible fire-resistant fabric that is mounted into a headbox, the fire curtain can be installed hidden above the ceiling. In the event of a fire, the automatic fire curtain deploys receiving a signal from a fire detection system to seal off an opening.

Horizontal Fire Curtain H & HC
The Smoke and Fire Curtain H is a 2-hour textile horizontally deploying opening protective for ceiling openings. It’s ideal for large open areas, like atriums. The horizontal fire curtain avoids the spread of smoke and fire between floors effectively. The system can be installed directly on the embrasure or under the ceiling, completely hidden to the viewer. High variability in design, like arch-shape is also available.
Options
Horizontal Smoke Curtain H: System with tensioning cables in a distance of 5′ to support the fabric with large dimensions and the pressure load. Ideal for large openings in ceilings up to 66′ in width and high drop length.
Horizontal Smoke Curtain HC: System for openings up to 33′ x 33′ without tensioning cables. 33’x 66′ is also available.
Operation
In the event of an alarm, the system closes using the spring force without requiring an external power source.

THE SYSTEM INCLUDES
Head box and fabric
The system incorporates a glass fiber fabric wound around a steel roller that incorporates a 24V permanent magnet roller. The roller assembly is encased in a galvanized steel head box, which can be hidden above the ceiling. The fabric is silver grey and can be printed with custom signage per customer request.
Side guides
The side guides provide a seal between the sides of the curtain fabric and the walls, ensuring that any positive or negative pressures created by a fire will be resisted by the curtain. Side Guides need to be buried in framing to be completely hidden.
Bottom bar
The bottom bar makes contact with the floor when the curtain is deployed, creating a tight seal with the building structure.

GX Elevator Smoke Containment
Stöbich’s Elevator Smoke Containment Curtain GX is an innovative, rolling gasketing smoke curtain to be used in conjunction with fire-rated elevator openings to achieve smoke and draft control, rated to UL 1784. When installed over fire-rated elevator doors, the GX Curtain complies with IBC 3006.3 subsection 3 as an alternative to an enclosed lobby, and is accepted by architects and AHJ’s throughout the United States.
The Elevator Smoke Curtain GX consists of a flame resistant, reinforced peek foil thermoplastic film that unrolls from a head box positioned above the opening. The curtain deploys upon a signal from a smoke detector or fire alarm, creating a smoke and draft control barrier between the curtain and the opening. The curtain uses sewn-in magnetic strips to adhere to either auxiliary rails or ferrous elevator frames.
GX Elevator Smoke Containment systems are used as alternatives to swinging smoke doors for hoistway protection, and are evaluated in accordance with ICC-ES acceptance criteria for smoke containment systems used with fire-resistive elevator hoistway doors and frames (ACC77, Section 3.1.1).

Electrical System / Fire Alarm
The GX smoke curtain system is gravity fail-safe and does not require emergency power for its safe operation. The electrical control system functions to rewind the curtain into its holding position and is intended to be connected to the building’s power supply of 120V AC/60Hz. A fire alarm control panel or a local smoke detector can be connected to a normally closed dry contact. The electrical system is listed to UL 864 and comes standard with 20 minutes of battery backup.
Curtain Deployment
The Elevator Curtain GX deploys when notified by the general fire alarm, local smoke detectors, or loss of power. A cabling system allows the curtain to unwind, with vertical magnetic strips creating a seal against the elevator frame or auxiliary rails. The housing unit may be installed directly above the elevator opening or recessed above the finished ceiling. The smoke curtain must be directly or indirectly connected to a smoke detector located in the elevator lobby.
Dimensions
The housing measures 10¼ʺ high X 9⅞ʺ deep.
Maintenance & Testing
The smoke curtain system is gravity fail-safe and does not require emergency power for its safe operation. The electrical control system functions to rewind the curtain into its holding position and is intended to be connected to the building’s power supply of 120V AC/60Hz. Fire alarm control panel or a local smoke detector can be connected to a normally closed dry contact. The electrical system is listed to UL 864 and comes standard with 20 minutes of battery backup.
Finish Options
The housing is designed to be either exposed or recessed and can be powder coated as required.
The frame surrounding the elevator door must be a minimum of No. 14 gage [0.0747 inches] steel with a 2-inch wide flat profile. Narrow, nonferrous, or beveled frames require the installation of auxiliary ferrous steel rails. The stock steel auxiliary rails have a stainless steel finish and can be powder coated in any available color.
Egress
The GX allows for egress from the elevator car after the system is deployed by pushing the curtain-mounted egress buttons located on the center of both sides of the screen. In the event of power failure, occupants can push on the curtain’s edge, and the magnetic strips will separate from the hoistway opening and allow for egress on either side.
